Montgomery County Arena

Montgomery County, Maryland, USA

The new Montgomery County Area was designed as a multi-purpose events center rivaling some of the most prominent arena’s in the DC metropolitan area - including the Verizon Center, Patriot Center, Comcast Center and the DC Armory - with each facility having its own distinct market niches and audiences. Three important factors were taken into account in developing a model for this facility. The first is site location. Situated adjacent to the Shady Grove metro stop and right off major instate highways and transitways, the site chosen provides optimal access for residents and visitors attending the arena. In addition, this site is also located in a relatively underserved area of the Washington, DC, region. Montgomery County provides an appropriate balance between distances of other arenas, stadiums and theaters.

Secondly, special attention to venue size and seating is critical for this endeavor. The anticipated seating of 6,500 fixed seats, 24 loge boxes with four seats each, 25 Executive Suites with 12 seats each, 500 Club Seats and the possibility for an additional 1,500 floor seats means the Montgomery County multi-purpose event center will be on the smaller end of multi-purpose arenas in the area. But because of its location, this amount of seating will still allow for the Montgomery County facility to attract and offer the type of events that will set it apart from larger competitors and also theaters and performing arts centers that have more focused programming.

Thirdly, programming is paramount to this project. With a business model presenting roughly 142 events annually - circuses, graduations, minor league basketball, arena football, indoor lacrosse, indoor soccer, tennis matches, track and fi eld competitions, concerts, business/educational conferences, art exhibitions, spiritual gatherings and marketing seminars - there is a lot of potential for the Montgomery County facility. While some regional arenas and theaters tend to offer specialized programming tailored toward one type of performance or another, this new facility will allow for a wide range of events that will serve to complement programming at other venues.

MJTX recognized the importance of the building’s image in promoting this new facility as a premier, state-of-the-art venue for top-notch performers and events. In addition to image and perception, accessibility and safety were also of utmost importance throughout the design process, with the goal of creating a high-quality design that was welcoming, accommodating and innovative.
